Biography
Sergei Medvedev is a Professor at Charles University in Prague. Born in Moscow, he studied at Moscow University, Columbia University in New York City, and holds a Ph.D. in history. He specializes in political history, international affairs, and Russian studies. In the past 30 years, he has held research positions and professorships in Germany, Italy and Finland, and in 2004-2020, he was a Professor and Associate Dean at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, before leaving Russia in 2022.
He has published ten books, over 50 academic articles and hundreds of essays on Russia, Europe and the international order. His recent books include The Return of the Russian Leviathan (Cambridge, Polity Press, 2020), A War Made in Russia (Polity Press, 2023) and Biopower in Putin’s Russia: From Taking Care to Taking Lives (with Andrey Makarychev, CEU Press, 2024).
