Centre for African Studies (CAFR)

What is CAFR

The Centre for African Studies (CAFR) is a platform for researchers and students engaged with Africa-related topics. Established at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, in 2019, it strengthens African studies across the Faculty and supports the development of research and teaching in this field.

Role within CenMAS

CAFR represents African studies within CenMAS and contributes region-specific knowledge of African societies, histories, languages, and cultures.

As part of CenMAS, it connects this expertise with other disciplines and world regions. In this way, CAFR supports multidisciplinary and comparative approaches to area studies and helps examine developments in Africa within broader regional and global contexts.

What does CAFR do?

CAFR organises courses, lectures, conferences, workshops, and public events. It supports Africa-focused student projects and theses, as well as the preparation of research collaborations and grant proposals.

The centre is open to researchers and students from across Charles University and from Czech and international universities and research institutions. It also welcomes cooperation with non-profit organisations and other partners interested in African topics.
