Curriculum

Martin Pehal is a religionist and Egyptologist at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, where he serves as Head of the Religious Studies programme. His research bridges ancient and contemporary worlds, combining the study of ancient Egyptian myths, rituals, and texts with an interest in public festivity, civil religion, and commemorative practices in modern societies. In 2012, he co-founded the Velvet Carnival (Sametové posvícení), an annual November 17th procession through Prague featuring oversized masks and satirical allegories addressing pressing social issues. Following the December 2023 mass shooting at his faculty, he coordinated the creation of ritual spaces to support community healing.
