What is the course about?
In this course, we will study the main transformations and characteristics of Argentine politics from the second half of the 20th century to the present. Through a chronological overview, we will review the changes and continuities in the political regime, with a special focus on the emergence of new actors on the political scene.
We will analyze:
- The phenomenon of the Peronist movement; the political mobilization of youth in the 1960s and 1970s
- The authoritarian breakdowns – with special attention to the last military dictatorship between 1976 and 1983
- The return to democracy in the 1980s; the neoliberal shift during Menem’s presidency in the 1990s
- The social and political crisis of 2001 with the call for “que se vayan todos” (let them all go) to politicians
- The progressive shift and youth mobilization during Kirchnerism
- The neoconservative shift during Macri’s presidency
- Argentine politics during the pandemic
- The emergence of the radical right-wing phenomenon under Milei’s leadership in the presidency
