The Visegrad Recognized Student scheme supports outstanding PhD candidates from Visegrad countries to undertake a one-term research placement at the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies, University of Oxford.

The programme will provide candidates from four partner universities with:

access to world-class academic resources,
expert mentorship and access to taught courses,
and opportunities to present their work to academics and experts in their field.

OSGA is one of the largest communities of Area Studies scholars anywhere in the world. We are committed to understanding cultural, economic, political, and social questions through the study of world regions in local, global, and comparative contexts. OSGA delivers world leading, multi-disciplinary programmes of research and teaching dedicated to Africa, China, Latin America, the Middle East, Japan, Russia and Eastern Europe, and South Asia.

Eligibility:

The programme is open to PhD candidates from the four partner universities in the Visegrád region (Charles University, Comenius University, University of Warsaw, and ELTE) doing research in the fields of Social Sciences and History.

Applications are welcome from candidates working in any geographical area covered by OSGA.

Timing:

Michaelmas Term 2026 (from 11 October to 5 December 2026).

Financial support:

A scholarship of in total €10 427 covering transport to Oxford (return), living costs, tuition fees (£2000), and administration. Please note: any visa costs are not included and must be covered by the candidate themselves.

Please provide the following documents as part of your application pack:

A letter of application
A letter from your institution confirming their support of your application
Transcripts from the degrees you have previously obtained
A 500 to 1000-word research proposal in English, including specification of which OSGA academic(s) you would like to work with.
2 academic references from senior members of faculty at your current university (one of these must be your supervisor)
English language competency (if you require a Tier 4 visa)
A current CV

The applications will be evaluated by an academic committee composed of staff from OSGA and our four partner institutions (Charles University, Comenius University, University of Warsaw, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE)). Results are expected to be announced by late July.
