The Center for Multidisciplinary Area Studies (CenMAS) is a newly established department at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, bringing together existing area studies structures and new research initiatives into a coherent interdisciplinary framework that connects research, teaching, and project-based activities, with the aim of strengthening the long-term development and international profile of area studies.
CenMAS builds on the transformation of the former Center for Ibero-American Studies into the Department of Latin American Studies (OLAS) and, together with the CenMAS Research Group, forms its core structure. While OLAS provides specialized teaching and in-depth regional expertise in Latin American studies, the CenMAS Research Group serves as an international research team focusing on comparative and interdisciplinary research on global regions.
CenMAS is closely linked to and supported by the ERA Chair in Multidisciplinary Area Studies (ERA-AREAS) project, funded by the Horizon Europe programme, which provides key resources for its institutional development, internationalisation, and research activities.
